The formulas
Impression engagement rate = (likes + replies + reposts + quotes) / impressions × 100
Follower engagement rate = (likes + replies + reposts + quotes) / followers × 100
Prefer the impression formula when analytics are available. Follower rate is a rough proxy and varies heavily by audience size.
FAQ
How do you calculate engagement rate on X?+
Impression rate = (likes + replies + reposts + quotes) ÷ impressions × 100. Follower rate = (likes + replies + reposts + quotes) ÷ followers × 100. Use impressions when you have them—they better reflect reach.
Should I include quote tweets?+
Yes if you can see them. Quotes are public interactions. If a dashboard omits quotes, note that your rate may be slightly understated.
Is a higher engagement rate always better?+
Not always. Tiny accounts can show high follower-based rates from a few interactions. Compare similar post types and audience sizes, and read our benchmarks guide for illustrative ranges.
